Contrary to what many think that it was the founder of Ever Ready Conred Hubert who invented it, the New Yorker Magazine stated that Joshua Lionel Cowen was the real inventor but later marketed the product to Hubert as a novelty.

There was no steady electric current during the time the flashlight was invented so you had to actually press a button to flash light at intervals. Thus the common name ‘flashlight’. Many European countries and in some other parts of the world, the name torch is preferred.
3. What is the difference between a lantern and a flashlight?
Mainly it has to do with the area it casts light upon. Flashlights generally can only light up a smaller area compared to lanterns which can be used to light up entire rooms. Another thing is that lanterns are made to be placed on flat places unlike flashlights that have to be held.
4. What is an LED flashlight?
LED or Light Emitting Diode flashlights don’t need batteris or bulbs and were invented in the late 1990’s and are well known for their durability. You don’t have to worry about changing batteries and running out of power. This kind of light source uses semiconductor technology.
5. Is it ok to change flashlight bulbs?
Yes. As long as you know what size and kind to buy, replacng your flashlights’ bulb wouldn’t be a bad idea.
6. Where are batteries supposed to be kept when not in use?
When using gadgets such as cameras, it is usually advisable to remove your batteries when not in use. With your flashlight however, it would be best if you keep them inside and ready to work at all times. You don’t want to be in the middle of an emergency and have to start looking for your batteries.
