Unusual Gifts for Christmas

Unlike some furry mammals who are visible throughout the year until they hibernate, the common hot water bottle does the opposite. Until it senses the first signs of a chill, it lurks in the corner of some cupboard or box. Then as if by magic it materialises! You will often see it hiding at the bottom of the bed

Of course this is nonsense, but I just wanted to highlight that for most of us hot water bottles are. I can’t even remember the last time that I actually bought one. it would have probably been a last minute Christmas present for an elderly relative.

As a country we still appear to have an unbreakable link to them. Once we as a nation were ridiculed by a Hungarian born British author called George Mikes. In his hilarious book ‘How to be an Alien’ he remarks “Continental people have sex lives, the English have hot water bottles’. Maybe there was an element of truth about the jibe, especially in the days when the designs were extremely dour and limited. These are adjectives that probably match a typical continental view of Anglo Saxon sex.

Just a second! Things have changed. Could it be possible that these things have become ’sexy’? I found a site the other day whilst doing random searches, that had a good selection of different styles and shapes. If I was ever searching for an unusual gift to buy, special objects not normally seen in the shops, this place would be the place begin looking. They have everything here, from buddha statues to retro telephones, and most things in between!

If you are primarily interested in hot water bottles, my favourites are those with a cushion shape, like the ‘Giraffe cushion’. All of these looked extremely comfortable, and probably had therapeutic values for those suffering from lower back or neck pain. They are made from 100% recyclable materials, and are guaranteed not to fade – perfect for the environmentally conscious.
